Military Medicine
With a strong military presence, San Antonio is fondly referred to as Military City, U.S.A.. The city is home to several bases, including Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, and Randolph Air Force Base, with Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley just outside the city. The former Kelly Air Force Base transitioned to Port San Antonio, an industrial/business park. A similar transition is occurring from the former Brooks Air Force Base to Brooks City-Base, the primary operating site of Hyperion Biotechnology, Inc.
San Antonio is becoming the stage for a far-reaching movement to create "joint" military operations. Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB will transfer some services to Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Fort Sam Houston, where a $724M expansion is being built. The hospitals will be named San Antonio Military Medical Center North and South, which will be staffed by Army, Air Force, and Navy personnel. Fort Sam Houston will also house the Medical Education & Training Campus, where joint military training will be conducted. BAMC's Burn Center and the Institute of Surgical Research already serve the pressing needs for trauma care and research. The military's annual economic impact on the city is in the billions of dollars and growing.
